Adding More Color to the City by the Bay: Top Artists in San Francisco

A city of deep artistic tradition, San Francisco continues to push the limits of artistic endeavors, from murals to media. The City by the Bay boasts an impressive public art collection alongside the museums, performing arts scene, and music culture.

History of Art in San Francisco

San Francisco has a long-lasting history of art, but it can oftentimes appear elusive and unique to outsiders. The city’s artists work in more obscure areas of the city, due to rising rent rates to re-openings of old art hubs.

A certifiable art hub in San Francisco is San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), with seven floors packed with modern and contemporary art. Pier 24 also has contemplative photography exhibits, a major highlight compared to the more touristy parts along the pier.

Here are four WXLLSPACE artists in San Francisco bringing unique ideas to the art world.

Robert Bowen

Starting in street art and graffiti, Robert Bowen has been painting animal/machine hybrid machinery. Bowen tries to answer questions about the future, particularly what will pollinate if bees and other insects go extinct. Like a mad scientist, Bowen imagines a dystopian science fiction future, where we have mechanized creatures, and contrasts it to our existing insects. His work urges people to protect our fauna and flora, while we can.

Max Ehrman Eon75

Max Ehrman, or Eon75, has 25 years of experience from working around the world. His geometric, 80’s inspired paintings bring creative inspiration and art to diverse communities. Beyond these cubist works, Ehrman has demonstrated a versatile style covering wildlife subjects, such as animals native to Southern California.

Nigel Sussman

Nigel Sussman uses pop inspiration to create complex murals by hand. His lighthearted and humorous work has an isometric line-art and simplistic yet striking colors and highlights fantastical architecture and imaginary machinery. He finds inspiration in MC Esher, the art of Where’s Waldo, and SimCity, and has worked with many companies like eBay and Adidas.
