Boldly Over Horizons by Gavin W Sewell anchors the exterior of Smothers Elementary School in Washington, DC as a diptych of densely layered visual information. The left panel contains a vertical arrangement of portraiture and abstraction rendered in jewel tones—magenta, cyan, gold, and deep purple—while the right panel expands this chromatic intensity across a wider surface. Reflective metallic silhouettes of children emerge throughout both sections, their translucent forms cutting through the saturated color field beneath.
The composition balances two distinct visual registers. Above, tonal line drawings and photographic transfers render scientific imagery and historical portraiture in sepia and cream. Below, a vivid collage of acrylic passages, textile patterns, and found materials creates visual density through overlapping shapes, fractured faces, and geometric ornament. The metallic figures—rendered in pale bronze or gold leaf—function as a unifying layer, their reflective surface contrasting sharply against the matte and textured grounds surrounding them.
Spanning 16 by 8 feet across wood panels, the work demonstrates how mixed media—painting, drawing, photographic transfer, sculptural assemblage, and reflective foil—can coexist within a single architectural plane. The diptych format allows each panel to maintain distinct visual weight while the silhouetted children create a visual throughline that frames the composition's relationship to the building and its young viewers.
