Prismatic Leaves

Prismatic Leaves, a 960 square-foot mural by Siena Baldi in Indianapolis, Indiana, first reads as a sweeping rainbow of geometric abstraction across an expansive brick wall. Magenta, orange, yellow, lime green, cyan, and deep blue shapes layer and overlap in angular formations, creating visual movement across the composition. A closer examination reveals the artist's underlying subject: the overlapping forms resolve into the silhouettes of native Indiana tree leaves, rendered through geometric reduction.

The mural's strength lies in this tension between immediate chromatic impact and revealed botanical specificity. Baldi constructs the composition through interlocking leaf shapes that maintain their abstract, angular character while functioning as a cohesive whole. The color palette transitions fluidly across the wall's surface, with warmer tones dominating the left side and cooler blues and greens anchoring the right. This chromatic movement propels the eye horizontally while individual leaf forms provide points of visual pause.

The geometric vocabulary—sharp angles, curved arcs, and layered translucency—creates depth without perspective. Shapes appear to float and intersect rather than sit flat against the wall, generating visual complexity at both immediate and distant viewing distances. The mural commands attention from the street while its botanical grounding invites sustained observation.
