University Hill

Covering a prominent wall in Durham, North Carolina, the mural titled University Hill by artist Joe Geis bursts with an engaging array of abstract forms and geometric signs. The artwork unfolds across the building’s facade, incorporating playful elements that feel both spontaneous and deliberate. The larger-than-life shapes and curves flow across the surface, creating a visual dialogue that invites passersby to explore its dynamic composition.

The arrangement of colors is distinctly warm, with hues of blush pink, bright red, and soft yellow juxtaposed against lighter tones of beige. These colors not only unify the mural but enhance its lively character. Each tone interacts, providing depth and variety while creating a sense of movement across the wall. The visual flow is further complemented by the positioning of the forms, which wrap around the structure’s edges, inviting an exploration of the mural from multiple viewpoints.

Geis’s technique reveals a hand-painted quality that emphasizes texture, with bold strokes set against the smooth surface of the brick. This tactile approach highlights the artist’s craft, establishing a connection between the mural and its surroundings. The mural’s integration into the architectural framework not only adds to the building’s aesthetic appeal but also positions it as a key feature in the upcoming home of the new Happy + Hale restaurant, contributing to the vibrancy of the community.
