Joe Geis
Joe Geis is a multi-disciplinary muralist, artist, and designer based somewhere between Nashville and Los Angeles. With a focus on murals, installations, illustrations, and patterns, Joe explores the movement and balance that lines, shapes, and negative space can create within different environments and spaces, as well as the positive influence that work can have on the local community and those who interact with it. His work is bright, inclusive, fun, and open for interpretation by all. With 20+ years experience in design/illustration and 11+ years experience painting large scale murals, Joe has painted murals in Wynwood (Miami), Los Angeles, London (England), Brooklyn, Nashville, San Jose, Mumbai (India), Charlotte, participated in international mural festivals in Detroit, San Antonio, Durham, and Jackson (Michigan), and completed murals for companies such as Facebook, WeWork, Raising Canes, Heineken, Verizon, CAVA, and The Infatuation.
Westerly House
2,400 square foot hand-painted lobby mural installation for Westerly House in the Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood of Nashville, TN. The artwork features a large, abstract mural with colorful geometric shapes and organic forms. This double-height immersive installation greets residents and visitors through a series of six 3-sided arches leading to a private central courtyard.

Sentral Nashville
A colorful mural with abstract shapes, bold typography, and geometric patterns. This mural was commissioned by Sentral to celebrate and pay homage to the everchanging history of the SoBro neighborhood in Nashville, TN. Spanning nearly 4,800 square feet across 3 adjacent walls, Joe nods to the past with hidden local "Easter eggs" and brings in new energy through bright, and large-scale collage. While developing the concept for the mural, Joe immersed himself in the history of the SoBro neighborhood and the cultural influences of Nashville. Amongst his signature use of bold patterns and vibrant colors, his own personal connections to Nashville are reflected in the mural’s iconography, such as the Tennessee state flower, the iconic Batman building, and a “meat-and-three” call-out – a Nashville staple. We hope that members of the Sentral community, as well as the local community, also see themselves reflected in the mural - that sense of belonging and cultural identity is a powerful thing.

Sentral commissioned artists Joe Geis and Jeremiah Britton, co-founders and partners of independent creative studio ALSO DEPT. to help transform a rooftop within the apartment community into a brilliant mural inspired by the vibrant local lifestyle that Sentral Wynwood residents and guests know and love. With their dynamic, energetic, and collaborative approach to creating large-scale abstract work, Geis and Britton were a natural choice for this 50’x50’ mural, their largest to date.

808 Hawthorne
25 murals in 15 days – spanning 5,200 square feet across 25 walls on 5 different floors of a residential parking deck. These murals were commissioned by 808 Hawthorne to help bring life to an otherwise dark and drab concrete parking deck in the vibrant and popular neighborhood of Plaza Midwood in Charlotte, NC. Joe developed floor-specific color palettes for the murals that also act as wayfinding for the tenants to be able to tell what floor they are on when parking.

Makers Alley
NHID and Channel House commissioned artists Joe Geis and Jeremiah Britton, co-founders and partners of independent creative studio ALSO DEPT. to bring in their dynamic, energetic, and collaborative approach to creating large-scale abstract work to the district. Their new 86’x58’ mural “Three Pointer at the Buzzer by the Creek,” which can be seen from blocks way, will act as a way to draw people into the new district and development. The color palette of this mural acts as a reflection of the sunsets, forest, flowers, and vegetation on the other side of Maker’s Alley. Not only does it represent the reflection, but all of the shapes are inspired by a bird’s eye view of local creeks, rivers, lakes, and tree tops, while the white line work acts as an abstract representation of oak leaves, inspired by Raleigh’s nickname, “The City of Oaks.”

Artville
“Blockbuster, Burnquist, Boomshakalaka” - Also Dept. for Artville Walls. September 2023. Nashville, TN - 25’ x 22’ Located in Wedgewood Houston at the corner of Chestnut St and Martin St. This past September marked the inaugural year of Nashville’s newest art festival, Artville. In addition to developing the visual brand identity, we served as founding members of the creative team; responsible for developing, producing, and participating in a local artist mural festival, Artville Walls. While collaborating on art and design projects over the last decade, we have spent countless hours reminiscing about our favorite childhood memories – many of which are eerily similar, despite growing up over 600 miles apart. Inspired by our shared love of sports, music, pop culture, and video games, this collaborative mural for Artville collages abstract shapes and crude illustrations while exploring the nostalgia and shared experiences of our 90s childhoods.
