Jose Mertz

’m Jose Mertz, a Miami-born multidisciplinary artist, illustrator, and creative director whose work explores the intersection of ancient civilizations, science fiction, spirituality, and contemporary culture. My artistic journey began in Miami and continued at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where I earned my BFA in Painting. Over the past two decades, I’ve developed a distinctive visual language that combines bold graphic forms, intricate linework, vibrant color, and imaginative characters. My practice spans large-scale murals, illustration, painting, and public art, with projects and collaborations involving Marvel, Adidas, Disney, PlayStation, Wynwood Walls, and Linkin Park. My murals explore themes of transformation, identity, mythology, and the relationship between humanity, nature, and technology. Drawing inspiration from hip-hop, ancient symbolism, dreams, and Zen philosophy, I create immersive visual worlds that invite viewers to discover their own narratives within the work. At the heart of my creative process is a desire to connect people through art. I approach each project as an opportunity to transform a space into an experience, balancing strong visual storytelling with the unique character of its environment. Whether working on a monumental public mural or an intimate drawing, my goal is to create work that sparks curiosity, encourages reflection, and leaves a lasting impression.
